Are Your Child’s Fine Motor Skills On Track?

Is your child getting ready for “big school”? Are your child’s fine motor skills on track?

It can sometimes be helpful to think of your child's fine motor development as a 4-legged stool. When one leg of a stool is missing or weak, the stool will wobble and fall over. Each of the legs needs to be in place in order for the stool to be stable.

And in the same way, there are different aspects of your child’s development that can affect whether their fine motor skills are on track or not. If one of those areas is weak or shaky, it can have an impact on their fine motor progress.

My indepth-article highlights these important factors that contribute to your child's fine motor development, to enable good pencil control and neat scissor cutting.

I’ve also added some school-related fine motor milestones as a guideline for what your child can aim for at each age – remember, though, that each child develops at their own pace!
