Got little hands at home? This one's for you... April 23, 2025 |
Got Little Hands At Home?If you have little hands around the house, chances are good that they are BUSY hands! Little ones – babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers – use their hands constantly in order to explore their world and build their skills. But sometimes we need some encouragement and inspiration to keep our children’s hands exploring. Why Hands-On Activities Are Important When your child engages with a hands-on activity, they are often building motor skills. But they are also engaging their eyes with what they are doing, which helps to build functional visual skills as well! Learning to focus on objects which are different distances away, and learning to track their hands and fingers with their eyes, are important functional visual skills to help develop better reading and writing skills when they are older. When kids play on devices, their eyes are focusing at only one distance, and not tracking movement as much, so they miss out on this important aspect of development. Devices and screen-time activities can be educational and useful, but it is important to balance it with hands-on activities. Here are two brand new pages on my site, full of super-simple, hands-on, screen-free activities you can do
with your toddler and preschooler: fine motor activities and playdough activities specifically geared to their ages!
