OT Mom Activity Updates -- Spring 2014
April 22, 2014

Spring 2014

Although I am writing this newsletter from a sunny South Africa that is heading into autumn (fall), I know my many readers in the northern hemisphere are enjoying the advent of spring!

Make the most of the longer, warmer days by heading outdoors with your kids and working on gross motor skills out of doors.

Even a simple activity like walking around the block can help a child to build physical endurance, which will help with concentration and stamina for doing school work tasks. So get out there and get the blood moving!

Helping Kids Tie Shoelaces

I received a couple of pairs of Easy-Tie shoelaces from Tying is a Snap, who wanted my opinion on them. It was perfect timing as my youngest child needed to learn to tie laces, but was struggling with regular shoelaces.

But the whole process of teaching her to tie them was one that made me analyze all the skills needed for tying shoelaces.

So if your child has been struggling to learn to tie laces, maybe there is a basic underlying skill that needs to be worked on first. So take a break from the laces, click on the link above and read my page to see what else you could try working on first.

Dealing With Picky Eaters

Having a fussy eater in the family is a stretch of any parent’s patience. Besides having to deal with your own frustration at your best culinary efforts being rejected, you also have to run the gauntlet of criticism from friends and family who believe you are spoiling your child. Trust me; I have been there, with two of my kids!

This article is written out of my own experience and understanding, as a mom and as an occupational therapist.

Tip of the Month

Do you have a wiggly, fidgety child, or one who loses focus easily while working at a desk?

Let them have an old rugby ball/ American football under their feet. It does not roll around the way a regular ball does, but being able to rock the ball back and forth while working can help your child to focus better on the task at hand.
