May 2017 - Learning Letters

My husband recalls that he only began learning to read and write when he entered first grade – before that, he was a free-range boy, just engaging in play all day. First grade was his introduction to formal learning.

How times have changed! Now kids are learning to read and write before entering first grade, and sometimes even before kindergarten.

That often means that kids whose hands are not yet ready to use a pencil for writing, are being asked to write out letters and numbers to help their reading and writing skills.

Or, if you look at it in “reverse” – sometimes kids are ready to learn letters before their hands are ready to write them on paper!

Letter Formation Tips & Activities

When it comes to learning letter formations – how to write the letter – there are actually 2 separate demands being made:

1) correctly perceiving and understanding how to make the letter (by tracing or copying)

2) controlling the pencil or crayon in order to write it out.

A child with poor fine motor skills may ace the first skill – they know exactly how to form the letter, but their poor pencil control makes their pencil-and-paper attempts look awful. So they (and you!) get discouraged.

If this describes your child, then check out my new pages:
